Ludhiana, August 2: ON the occasion of World Breast-feeding Week, Christian Medical College and Hospital organised a lecture for the students and faculty of Master Tara Singh Memorial College. World Breast-feeding Week is celebrated across the world from August 1 to 7.

The Paediatrics department of CMCH held an interactive lecture at Master Tara Singh College to spread awareness about the benefits of breast-feeding. The message for the celebrations was ‘Welcome the baby softly, for after all motherhood is all about true love and care’.

Listing the numerous benefits of mother’s milk, Dr Inderpreet Sohi, MD Paediatrics said, “Mother’s milk is the complete food that provides the newborns with all the nutrients and benefits that their growing bodies require. The foremost advantage is that mother’s milk is easily available, is clean, uncontaminated and sterile. Moreover, it is available at a correct temperature for the baby’s needs.”

She recommended that a baby be exclusively breast-fed for at least the first six months. Studies and research are proving the concept of touch therapy. This maintains that the breast-fed child who enjoys the constant touch of its mother while nursing and sleeping, grows up to be a confident and bright citizen.
In her welcome address, Dr Parveen Chawla, speaking on behalf of the Principal, Master Tara Singh College, Dr Sahota, staff and students thanked the CMCH team for taking up this matter of social relevance.

A poster was released by Director CMCH Dr John Pramod and Dr Mary Abraham, head of the Department of Gynecology, which lists the advantages of breast feeding along with the disadvantages of bottle feeding. “CMC Hospital and its concerned departments has initiated an awareness-generating exercise, because breast feeding is important not just for the health of the infants but for the health of the entire nation,” said Dr Pramod. He thanked all the colleges and other institutions which have joined the hospital in its initiative.
Dr Mary Abraham, in her message, also motivated the young mothers and said, “There are many misconceptions even amongst the educated persons, that breast-feeding affects their figure. But experts are of the opinion that this is not true. Breast-feeding does not alter a woman’s figure. Instead, recent researches have shown that nursing offers protection against osteoporosis later in life, and reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.”
