The
Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India
(BPNI) is a national network of individuals
and organisations working for protection,
promotion and support of breastfeeding
in India. BPNI believes that breastfeeding
is the right of all mothers and children.
BPNI works through advocacy, social mobilization,
information sharing, education and training
of health workers and monitoring the compliance
of International Code/The IMS Act to protect
breastfeeding. BPNI works as the Regional
Focal Point for South Asia for the World
Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA)
& International Baby Food Action Network
(IBFAN).
BPNI
does not accept funds or sponsorship of
any kind from the companies producing
infant milk substitutes, feeding bottles,
related equipments, or infant foods (cereal
foods) or those have been ever found to
violate the IMS Act or The International
Code.
BPNI
encourages the development of alliances
or coalitions, collaborations of breastfeeding
advocates to stimulate greater activity
in the country.
BPNI
plans to strengthen and expand activities
by establishing task forces for various
different areas of work:
I.
Training
BPNI
advocates work towards training of health
professionals and community workers to
protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.
BPNI will coordinate and facilitate the
education and training of grassroot personnel
in the health and nutrition sector, both
public & private hospital. BPNI will enhancing
quality of BFHI through improved training.
II.
Information
BPNI
shall expand the availability of information
on breastfeeding and complementary feeding
at the local, state, national and regional
level; strengthen the capacity of breastfeeding
resource center to collect, use and share
information to support programs. BPNI
will assist in disseminate of malnutrition
produced by BPNI, IBFAN and WABA, including
maintenance of a website for information.
III.
Research
BPNI
will encourage research on breastfeeding
and complementary feeding issues and disseminate
these findings for protection, promotion
and support of breastfeeding.
IV.
Women and work
BPNI
will support special needs of working
women through advocacy work and information
campaigns towards ensuring their rights.
V.
Monitoring and Implementation of the IMS
Act
BPNI
will work on systematic monitoring the
compliance of the IMS Act, International
Code and subsequent World Health assembly
resolutions by providing information and
training development of materials at all
levels.
VII.
Education
BPNI
will analyse & develop curriculum on encourage
on infant issue and institutions to adapt
them in their training. It will also continue
to evaluate the impact of the same on
practices.
VII.
Social mobilization
BPNI
will support social mobilization towards
a breastfeeding culture to all and disseminating
information to promote, protect and support
breastfeeding.
VIII.
Policy and planning
The
task force will assist BPNI in forward
planning and policy for future actions
& activities.
1.
The Managing Committee will appoint Task
Force Coordinators. Every appointment
shall cease at the end of two years unless
re-appointed by the Managing Committee.
2.
Each task force coordinator shall link
with groups and individuals from among
the BPNI members to facilitate his/her
area of work.
3.
Each task force is expected to meet at
least once in a year.
The
functions of the task force shall include:
1.
Identifying and reviewing existing activities;
2.
Identifying and prioritizing needs within
a particular area of task force concern;
3.
Stimulating and coordinating action in
response to these needs;
4.
Networking, including expansion of participation;
5.
Resource mobilization;
6.
Cross-linking with other task force
