WEBINAR

Counselling Women on Breastfeeding and Infant and Young Child Feeding: How, When and by Whom: Date:31st JULY, 2020 at 12.00 hrs IST

Organised by BPNI in Collaboration with WHO and ERA's Lucknow Medical College & Hospital Supported by HCL Foundation.

Background
Counselling pregnant and lactating women on breastfeeding helps in building her confidence, improving feeding technique, preventing or resolving breastfeeding problems and adhering to the recommended optimal breastfeeding practices. Enough scientific evidence is available about the positive impact of breastfeeding counseling both at hospital and at community in increasing rates of initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth as well as duration of exclusive breastfeeding. However, this intervention is not universally accessible to pregnant and lactating women. There is a need to streamline the process to improve its availability, both in the health system and in the community. Many countries have established mechanisms for providing breastfeeding counselling to the mothers. India’s breastfeeding programme, Mothers’ Absolute Affection (MAA) programme launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has included counselling as an essential component.

This Webinar will have discussion on various aspects of breastfeeding counselling including its’ components, global recommendation, interventions and knowledge in implementing counselling services, particularly in India, by domain experts and experience sharing by a mother.

The webinar will be useful to the policy makers and programme managers of the MOHFW, Government of India and the State Governments, Paediatricians, Obstetricians, Nursing staff, Pregnant and lactating women, BPNI members, Counselling specialists, and Professional bodies of doctors and nurses.
